About
Marijke, an internationally renowned mosaic artist, embarked on her creative journey in search of a hobby, only to discover her true passion in the mesmerizing world of mosaics. Born with an innate curiosity and an eagerness to learn, Marijke’s artistic odyssey began in 2007 when she stepped foot into the inspiring mosaic atelier of Mireille Swinnen.
It was within those walls that Marijke’s artistic spirit ignited, as she embarked on her first mosaic project—an elegant design crafted from flat glass tiles. The experience left an indelible mark on her, sparking an insatiable desire for knowledge and artistic growth. In 2008, Marijke eagerly delved into the realm of marble combined with Smalti, a decision that would shape her future works in profound ways.
Marijke’s artistic style emerged as a tapestry of vivid colors and contemporary aesthetics, becoming the hallmark of her creations to this day. Inspired by the legendary artist Hundertwasser and his magnificent, colorful designs, Marijke began infusing her artwork with an abundance of vibrant hues and golden accents, always working with the captivating medium of glass Smalti.
Venturing to Venice in 2008, Marijke embarked on a transformative study trip, attending a masterclass at the esteemed Orsoni in the heart of the city. This experience immersed her in a kaleidoscope of Smalti tiles, offering a symphony of colors and intricate golden details. Venice became Marijke’s artistic sanctuary, a place where her soul found solace amidst the grandeur of Italian mosaic artistry.

Throughout her career, Marijke’s pursuit of excellence led her to numerous mosaic training programs across Italy. From the enchanting canals of Venice to the charming towns of Spilimbergo, Piacenza, Florence, Ravenna, and Gallipoli, each location left an indelible mark on her artistic evolution.
A pivotal moment in Marijke’s journey came when she encountered the captivating works of mixed materials during her time in Paray-le-Monial, France. It was here that she discovered the beauty of embracing irregularity in her mosaic creations, allowing her imagination to roam freely and create unique, captivating pieces.
Marijke’s artistic development would not have been possible without the guidance and mentorship of remarkable individuals. She is forever grateful to Mireille Swinnen, Dino Maccini, and Marco Santi for shaping her talent and nurturing her artistic voice.
Currently, Marijke finds inspiration at the Academy of Wilrijk, where she continues to explore new horizons. Her latest endeavor revolves around the creation of mosaic portraits, pushing the boundaries of her artistry and embarking on a fresh creative challenge.
Marijke’s style can be described as contemporary mosaic art, where her masterpieces come to life in two or three dimensions. Her works exhibit a captivating interplay of vibrant glass Smalti infused with delicate gold accents, or tranquil Carrara marble adorned with subtle color accents. Innovative and expressive, Marijke’s art is akin to painting with stones in motion, capturing the essence of her subjects with remarkable skill and finesse.
Today, Marijke’s artistic journey continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide. Her passion and dedication to the ancient art of mosaics have solidified her position as an internationally renowned mosaic artist, elevating the craft to new heights and leaving an enduring legacy in the realm of contemporary art.
